New Day #287

Found myself with some time to kill between appointments but resisted the urge to hang out at Starbucks because it's so friggin' unoriginal.

So I went to a cemetery instead. I'm surprised I've never thought to do it before. I mean, if you have time to kill...

I like cemeteries, particularly those with mausoleums, which remind me of playhouses. Dollhouses of the Dead.

I highly recommend it and will certainly do this again. It was like going to a very quiet park. And I felt like the dead were glad to have some company.

I love cemeteries. Always have. I love to see what is on the tombstones. Comparing how long one spouse lived after the other passed away. The loving tributes on the headstones, etc. Cemeteries are rich with history.

Have you ever read "Falling Angels" by Tracy Chevalier? Almost the entire story takes place in a cemetary. Maybe you can read it during your next visit.

Now I've got Alice Cooper's "I Love The Dead" playing in my head...thanks for that.

Cemeteries creep me out.

But "A Fine and Private Place" by Peter S. Beagle is a good read.

Well, as you know I am a bit partial myself :) Good choice! For an easy read try "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman.

Thanks for the linky "fellow blogger" love and for this post, which makes me feel a little less like a weirdo for my affinity for cemeteries. It's always fascinated me to look at the tombstones and wonder about the kinds of lives the people lead and what their stories were.

David, I was going to suggest that very book. I'm a great fan of Peter S. Beagle.

I love cemetaries too, although the time I found myself wandering through the children's section from the 1800's was a little unnerving. They're such incredibly small spaces, y'know?

I've adored cemeteries all my life and have passed this interest to another generation.

But then I spent time in Slovenia this summer, in the small town of my husbands family, and the compact cemeteries there are tended daily by local family members. It was not only beautiful and rare, but the most joyful place!

I love cemeteries. I don't plan on ever residing in one myself, but I like to go visit all the strangers there. Where's a good Portland cemetery?

The one in the picture--that I visited--is Riverview. Large and beautiful.

Gravestones and Headstones of which I am smitten
Old ones and news all over Britain
Covered in monuments and angels with wings
Graveyards are one of my favorite things!

Ok, I'm no Julie Andrews or Rogers and Hammerstein but this came to my head when I heard of the cemetary visit.
