Because the owners of Hip Chicks Do Wine invited me to Squishfest 2008, where I learned, among other things, that you can make white wine from red grapes.
Who knew? While I was disappointed I didn't get to stomp those grapes with my feet, I so admire these women. They had a dream of owning a winery and, against considerable odds, they've made it happen.
"This is my philosophy," said self-described Wine Goddess Laurie Lewis. "Most people go through their lives wishing they'd do something. Then they wake up and realize that they haven't done it." She shook a wrench for emphasis. "The worst thing that can happen is that you fail. And if you do, who the fuck cares?"
