New Day #90

Today I discovered skunk cabbage. Well, not like a scientist who gives it a long Latin name no one ever uses (malodorous florus), but, hey, it was new to me.

And, yes, it really does smell like skunk.

Pretty though, huh? Very Mapplethorpey. As in, "Is that a pistil in your petal or are you just happy to see me?"

I grew up with skunk cabbage in the woods around my neighborhood. What a blast from the past.

I am one of those odd ducks who remembers the latin names of plants from my horticulture and botany class days in undergrad. I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I can tell you the latin name of Redbud and Dogwood trees.
