Today I complimented everyone I met. I definitely recommend it next time you're feeling low. A sincere bit of appreciation brought smiles all day, as well as unexpected conversation. (Upon admiring a woman's red dress, I was informed it was actually "lava." Lava?)
That said, it can be a lot work finding something to appreciate on the spot, as evidenced by this sparkling exchange:
"Spare some change?"
"Sorry. Uh, nice sign?"

Giving and receiving compliments is always fun. Unless it's really awkward like your sign moment... then it's more fun.
I had to give a talk on "Customer Service" here at work. The compliment thing would have been a nice addition.
