Today I turned down the volume. Using a pair of ear plugs and noise-reducing headphones, I was able to significantly soften my world.
Immediately I noticed vibrations of which I'm normally not aware. From the tremors I felt from my own footsteps, you would have thought I was a clydesdale. At the grocery store I was spared the background music, but became keenly aware of the crinkle of the plastic bag of romaine hearts or the crumble of cereal inside the box.
It was like being in a velvet cave. Very relaxing. Since I didn’t want to be one of those people who screams when they can’t hear other people, I talked softly, which Floyd appreciated. “You should wear those all the time,” he said. “You’re much easier to be around.”

IT's interesting how our brains operate--i.e. speaking softer and quieter, when one's hearing is diminished, when you would think it would be the opposite.
A complete non-sequitur: Can one purchase your books directly from you?--Do you get a few more pennies in your pocket via direct purchase? If not, I'll go to my favorite independent bookstore.
Thoughtful of you to ask, but I much prefer readers buy them through bookstores. That way, they count toward the sales figure.
Cool. Will do.
