Normally, I eschew cute garnishes or any fussy food preparation. Anytime I get served a plate of artfully constructed food origami, all I can think is how someone's hands have been all over it.
But this project is about facing my prejudices as well as my fears and limitations, so I decided to carve a radish rose. I mean, take a look at these instructive photos from Your Friend and Mine the Internet.
It's so easy! It's so simple!
It so did not work.

I'm so with you on this one. I've tried stuff like this before too. The instructions, or even video, look sooo easy. A cut here, a pull there...and mine look more like a kindergartner gone askew using scissors for the first time. Not a pretty picture.
For instance: those stupid Halloween pumpkins. You know the ones. The artful faces and designs that you carve out of the skin on the pumpkins. Yeah, right. My poor pumpkin looked more like something out of the Halloween movie. Carved and stabbed was more like it. Don't think that is what they had in mind.
Maybe it's because I was raised by a mom who had no fear of dirt or germs (she'd pick up food that fell on the floor at plop it back on your plate), but the idea of other people touching my food has never been an issue for me. I love pretty garnishes. Can't say I've tried to make any myself, though.
Ah, c'mon - you should have included photos of your results, so we could compare and contrast!
