New Day #235
Because I'm teaching at a writing conference, I've partaken in that most esteemed of literary traditions: drinking.
Nothing new for me, of course, but I don't drink much anymore. So I welcomed the opportunity to sample four different scotches, ranging in price from $35 to $135 per bottle.
Not only could I not tell the difference, I also announced I thought the $135 bottle of Glenmorangie had a "rubbing alcohol/lighter fluid" taste.
'Cuz I'm classy like that.

Did you try Laphroaig? It's a completely different type of Scotch. It tastes mostly like peat moss, as I recall.
Hmmm, I consider it more of a wood chip flavor. That is, a wood chip that has been on the ground and probably urinated upon by a mangy dog.
Blasphemy! Try scotches (single malts) from the Highlands. They are my favorite, and IMO, smooother on the tongue and throat. The Islays tend to have more of that sharp bite/aftertaste kick to them. They tend to be more 'peaty', with a heavy smokey gouda aroma and taste.
While I consider myself a scotch purist, I always drink mine neat with a twist (of lemon). Some scotches do taste better with a splash of water or ONE ice cube to cute the bite.
I'm with you Marc. I went to a Robert Burns party that featured several high-end scotches and I could not get past a sip. To me they were vile.
