New Day #130

Does having something happen twice that's never happened to you twice count as a New Thing? In this case, I think so. Because, for the first time in my life, I've had my identity stolen AGAIN.

You may recall that someone purporting to be me called Powells.com, claiming I'd been stabbed. Well, I'm lounging poolside at the aptly named InnDulge (courtesy of my friends, the owners), when I get a phone call informing me that the Faux Marco has struck again, this time at A Great Good Place for Books. Apparently, my car had been impounded with my wallet and cell phone. Would the store please wire money?

The owner, Kathleen Caldwell, got on the phone and informed the imposter she knew it wasn't me, to which, get this, he began to argue.

Say what you want, you've got to admire his chutzpah.

I wonder if it is the same guy, or if talk of your admirer, has started copy cat impersonations.

Identity thief or stalker? It's beginning to be a little creepy. Rest assured, I won't be taken in if they call us -- which will mean that it will actually be you!

You're fine with it until...he shows up and insists hubby is HIS hubby. In which case you BEAT the imposter's ass. lol.

Wonder who this guy is? it wouldn't be funny, but it kinda would, if it turns out you know him. And this is how he knows so much about you.

Still it is creepy.

Well, it's the first time something this strange happened twice, so I think it counts. Let's hope this loon finds another way to be his most audacious self.

I had someone try to purchase several ATVs with my credit. My card company became suspicious when the charge came through and gave me a call to see if I was actually going to buy SEVERAL ATVs. I said nope, not even one.

It's good to see that your identity thief is a reader at least.

There was a big article (Publishers Weekly online, I think?) about a rash of this kind of thing all over the West coast - same stories, and they have 3 people - one chick & 2 guys (one is apparently English). They claim to be stranded, and ask to have money wired to them. Generally, we booksellers are both skeptical and poor, so not many have been taken in. Weird.
